Beta Readers

Beta Readers, or editors, are a valuable part of the development of any story. Besides finding grammatical and spelling errors, they can find plot holes and help you improve the prose of your story. Even I have one.

To be added to this list, fill out the application.

Aelorn

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

entire LOTR series, The Hobbit, and a good bit of The Silmarillion

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Grammer, spelling, character generation (general & personality/physical characteristics), forcing you to NEVER give up

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Fantasy is my preferrred genre and the one I work with the best. As to rating… G-PG13, but… nothing sexual or innapropriate for a teenage reader to get caught with at school, and I don't mind if it's super gorey.

  • Availability:

    Everyday after school except Tuesdays

Aster

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

I have read the Trilogy and the Hobbit. I have watched the movies as well.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

I DO NOT check for spelling and grammar, but I would rather look for plot holes and try to make the story more reasonable and more middle-earthy. I am familiar with elven names and languages and such, and I would love to co-create something with you as well.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Any genre would be fine, really. I welcome stories with Adventure, Angst and slash. I LOVE OCs but I suggest owners of OCs take a mary sue test.

  • Availability:

    Any time. Email me.

B2MW

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

The trillogy, the Hobbit, The Silmarillion, parts of The Unfinished Tales, and various internet resources.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Grammar, logic checking, and a bit of character creation help. I'm much stronger with Third Age Gondor than Second Age Elves.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

I prefer G-PG13 genfic, but will also take romance of het or slash variety, as long as given nothing too graphic.

  • Availability:

Logic checking and character creation takes longer than sending a fic through the spelling and grammar check, but given an eager author and not too much RL chaos, I can probably turn a one-thousand-words-or-less chapter/fic around within three or four days.

Caitydubbelyew

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Children of Húrin. I am trying to get my hands on the rest.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Punctuation, grammar, 'Using big words' - finding synonyms or descriptive words and making sure the same words or phrases aren't repeated over and over. Finding ways to fit scenes or ideas into the bigger picture, making sure the story flows and events make sense in the order they are placed. Making sure characters, even if they are outlandish and bordering on ridiculous are at least somewhat believable. Coming up with further ideas and helping to fill in gaps in the story. Finding, researching and verifying canonical facts and finding ways to twist them into the story. I know more about the Elves and Ainur than the other races but I still know all of them pretty well or will learn what I don't know.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Genres: I will read most things but prefer to stay away from: extreme AU unless it has a brilliant plot, Mpreg, heavy slash, smut, any stories that mock and/or abuse the ideas of the author in a way that I feel is inappropriate. Stories without a plot, with extreme abuse or abuse which is not fitting to the character, (e.g. uncorrupted elves, hobbits) I'm not too fussed about rating but prefer to stay away from stories which are heavily rated because of a lot of Sexual activity. I will just skip over that bit and carry on with the rest.

  • Availability:

Weekends (usually) and evenings. Some afternoons when I don't have classes. If it needs to be done immediately (within the day or overnight) I will try my best but please don't expect that for every chapter/story. Sometimes I will be unable to beta due to having an extremely busy week/few weeks but I will notify you, or due to procrastination. (I usually only procrastinate when my writing has taken a holiday and I can't focus.)

Calenlass Greenleaf

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

I've read the Silmarillion at least twenty to twenty one times, The Hobbit five, and The Lord of the Rings at least seven. Other books include reading Morgoth's Ring two times, The Children of Húrin twice, The Lays of Beleriand, The Book of Lost Tales Vol 1, and part of The Return of the Shadow. Other books about Tolkien and his works that I've read at least one or twice are Tolkien: A Biography by Humphrey Carpenter, Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth by Bradley J. Birzer, Understanding the Lord of the Rings: The Best of Tolkien Criticism, The Road to Middle-Earth and Tolkien: Author of the Century, both by T.A. Shippey, Meditations in Middle-Earth, The J.R.R. Tolkien Handbook : A Comprehensive Guide to His Life, Writings, and World of Middle-Earth by Colin Duriez, The Atlas of Middle-Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad, The New Tolkien Companion by J.E.A. Tyler, and Tolkien and the Critics: Essays on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings by Neil David Isaacs.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

I can correct spelling, grammar, stylistic problems, OOCness, etc. I have MS Word 2003, dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia at my fingertips. I like to nitpick. :) I can tell the difference between a Mary-Sue and a well-rounded character. I can either be very critical, or only slightly critical. It's your choice.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Family, Friendship, Action/Adventure genres are my favorite, but I can do all other genres, too. I have a high tolerance level for many things. I will accept beta-ing a romance after an evaluation on my part. Oneshots, short stories, novel lengths, can do. I prefer book-based fics, but I will also do movie-based ones. I own the Lord of the Rings Movie Trilogy, Extended Edition. Slash (Whether it be implied, light, or heavy, I won't do it). Mary-Sues. PWP (smut, no plot) stories. Stories with too many careless mistakes (They are a headache. I've done it a few times, and each time leaves me feeling drained). Stories that are too grim. Ridiculous AUs, like LOTR High School Version. Humorous stories that are not humorous, or have too many "inside jokes" that no one but the author and his/her friends can understand. I also will not beta stories which portray evil Thranduil (Who beats his son and locks him up), Denethor (who hates Faramir and abuses him), or Elrond (who hates Aragorn because he likes Arwen). Neither will crazy pairings such as a hobbit/elf be accepted.

  • Availability:

I sometimes leave for long periods of time, but I DO NOT leave unexpectedly. I usually send out a message to everyone I beta for before leaving. (If I leave unexpectedly for a long time and do not come back, it means I died. Meaning that day will not happen for a very, very long time. I hope.) I can e-mail, but I won't IM. It takes up too much of my time. I'm usually at home, or near home, and since I read/beta at a fairly quick pace, you either get your work back in either a few hours or in a day. Of course, if you need a story within an hour, I'll do my best. Longer works, however, will take more time.

Cheryl Hopper

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

Listened to Silm on tape once, read Lord of the Rings several times

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Get a beta and editor, all in one! Third Age is what I know best

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Pretty much anything but slash, will read all ratings

  • Availability:

Mostly on the weekends but a few weeknights aren’t out of the question.

Elana Kahn

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

Silm, LOTR, Hobbit, maybe half of History of Middle Earth stuff (Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales, Children of Húrin, etc.)

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

    Spelling, word flow, some grammar

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Fantasy; I can read all ratings from G to NC-17 including slash/erotica

  • Availability:

Any time I'm not working; my schedule is quite flexible

Estel Talroval

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

The Hobbit, LotR, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Bits of some volumes of HoME (Book of Lost Tales 1, Shaping of M-E, Lost Road, Sauron Defeated, Morgoth's Ring)

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Grammar, character portrayal, accuracy to canon.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

I like humour and adventure best (I love fight scenes), don't particularly like romance, but I'll take anything. AU is fine as long as it's stated as such.

  • Availability:

    Anytime, but with occasional delays.

  • How Estel Talroval will beta for you:

Please put your story in the body of the email, as I often can't read attachments.

Faervereth

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

All of LOTR, the Hobbit, Laws and Customs of the Eldar, The Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide (might not count, but it works), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: The World of Hobbits (ditto).

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

I am the grammarian about whom your mother warned you (subtext: I will correct every single little tiny grammar mistake until your fanfiction is nearly in Olde English). I'm very good with English. GIVE ME EVERY SINGLE STORY ABOUT ELVES AND/OR HOBBITS. I'm really good with Elves and Hobbits. Especially the food. For both.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

I like romance, I will critique romance and not romance. If it isn't romance, I will love adventure. Mix the two and I will love you. I will still critique other stories-don't worry. Please keep it to about PG-13.

  • Availability:

Every day after and during school (daily from 7:45) and all day Saturday & Sunday (mostly). During the summer, all day, except when I go on vacation. I'll send out a mass email when I do go on vacation.

Faravenel

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The History of Middle Earth (minus the drafts of the Lord of the Ring), the Children of Hurin, the Letters of Tolkien, The Tolkien Reader (several stories and essays by Tolkien - notably On Fairy Stories and Leaf by Niggel), the Father Christmas Letters and Roverandom -- as well as several books about Tolkien or his works by third parties. That being said, if I haven't read it, I own it, or I know where to buy it, and will buy it, if you ask me to read it. I even have The Road Goes Ever On: A Song Cycle with Donald Swann.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

    TL;DR:
+ I'm good at archaic/'Oxbridge' English and understanding/recreating archaic societies.
+ a walking Tolkien encyclopaedia, much to my friends' dismay.
+ Bonus! Extensive experience with the Languages of Arda - even oddballs like Valanorian and Northern Avarin.
I've made an extensive study of English -- in particular, the sort of high-minded English that Tolkien is wont to use. This skill will be of particular interest to Silmarillion writers and those Lord of the Rings writers who value authenticity. Additionally, I have a keen understanding of pre-modern societies - what they gave thought to, how they viewed themselves and their place in the universe, the ebb and flow of society, the every day trials and triumphs - the rhythms of life and death.
I also have a deep knowledge and understanding of Tolkien's works, and I'm very good at spotting where things go off the rails.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Genre: I'm willing to try anything once. However, I have tried slash and other such erotica, more than once, and found it not to my taste. On the flip-side, I love Lost-In-Middle-earth stories (tales wherein a person, usually a young woman, find themselves transported from modern-day Earth to Arda, and have to fend for themselves) so if you're not sure if I'll like it, send it to me, and I'll let you know.
Rating: As stated above, I'm not interested in reading a porno. I'm fine with violence, though.
Regarding Original Characters: I have nothing against OC's, even if the story revolves around them. In fact, every single thing that approaches Fan-fiction that I've even come up with revolves around an OC

  • Availability:

As of February 2016, I'm wide open. If you like, ask me about it on Skype - search Faravenel, add me and I'll get back to you, usually within the hour.

  • How Faravenel will beta for you:

That will depend on what you want me to look at, and what you're comfortable with - though I'd prefer to sit down with you and do a live edit.

Kelsey

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Hobbit, Lord of The Rings, And, non-Tolkien: Weapons and Warfare, The Complete Visual Companion, Official Movie Guide, A Rough Guide to LotR, And, I'm getting Tolkien’s biography from the library this week.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Grammar, I suppose. And making sure certain scenes or actions are realistic to the story.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Anything. I'm not a picky reader, but I only like slash if it's tasteful.

  • Availability:

All the time. I have no life.

Lomendil

On the prowl for more Tolkien books, and undecipherable languages. I am trying to get a Linguistics degree. The Silmarillion is basically the most important book to me than anything else! I can handle Quenya, Sindarin, Silvan, Khuzdul, Westron, Adunaic, Old English, Valinorean, and the fragments of Orcish/Black speech that we have.
  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

LoTR, Hobbit, Silmarillion many many times, all the Histories of Middle Earth, Unfinished Tales.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Historical accuracy, but I also study narrative and plot schematics, so both the writing and the content I can understand. I really know the canon like the back of my hand.

Also I can edit grammar and word choice rather well

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

I will read anything, truly anything, but my specialty is "Did X and Y ever meet? what would it be like? Why did Turgon show up late to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad? What was Gil-Galad like?" in addition to "Does this make sense?"

  • Availability:

e-mail to find out. Im very available

  • How Lomendil will beta for you:

I can do word, PDF's, google docs. Just ask. really.

Los Christabel

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

LoTR, Silm, Farmer Giles of Ham and Smith of Wooton Major (selected writings), other minor works whose names escape me.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Good on major canon, spelling and grammar.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

    Generally no angst/slash.

  • Availability:

Weekends (0kay to email during week so I will have it over weekend. I have no internet on the weekend) Please nothing that needs to be finished overnight.

Mellissa Gray

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth series, The Silmarillion. Has seen all of the movies (not that those really count…). Owns all the books, and the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King extended edition.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Small canon details, basic spelling and grammar, ability to find specific passages for reference. Please specify what issues you’d like me to look at.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Any genre, any rating, but the lower the rating the better.

  • Availability:

Am a full-time high school student with 40 hours of community service still to complete, but can and will make time for helping out.

Nath

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

LotR, Hobbit, Silmarillion, HoME, BoLT, CoH, various secondary background books

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

    canon, grammar, logic, Quenya

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

I'm willing to at least look at nearly every rating and genre (no RPS or PWP; preferably no 'cute elfling' or young hobbit stories; my movieverse canon is weak, so I can't do much with movie-based stories; R rating not a problem), but if I think I can't do anything with your story for whatever reason, I'll tell you.

  • Availability:

mail me, since it depends (also on whether I'm writing myself at the time); short stuff should usually turn around in a few days; if you're writing a novel we'll work something out.

Neniel

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

The Two Towers, The Return of The King, The Fellowship of The Ring, The Silmarillion, The Book of Lost Tales.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Im good at rearranging sentences and grammar mistakes along with spelling and repetitiveness.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Genre would be mainly fantasy or sci-fi I suppose and any rating is fine with me I'm not squeamish when it comes to writing.

  • Availability:

Mostly always, I'm still in high school and that may be a turn off for this application but I am in love with theses books and love reading through other peoples point of view.

  • How Neniel will beta for you:

PDF mostly and I don't think I would be able to keep myself from annotating once in a while but editing would be primarily what I would do.

Rodwen

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

The Hobbit and currently reading the Silmarillion. Although, I know most stories in a general overview with a few details from internet sources and I can easily research a particular story if necessary.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Most people tell me I have an impeccable sense of grammar, and I can say that that is mostly true. Although English is not my first language, I am thoroughly obsessed with grammar and punctuation. I am also pretty good with spelling although large and complicated words sometimes confuse me. I'm also a sucker for details so most plot holes will not go past my senses. :)

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

To be honest, I read pretty much anything. I especially adore Fantasy, Adventure, and medium amounts of romance. That's not to say I won't enjoy something purely based around romance, though. I can go from mild children's books to full on hardcore smut so I'm not much of a blushing bride here…! Also, I really don't mind non-straight couples, a thousand or so fanfictions later!

  • Availability:

I have school so that does get in the way but I always find time to read something throughout the day so I'll always try to fit in some reading time. I only ask for patience since sometimes school gets in the way and it is my priority. But I'm pretty much always available. ;) Many thanks for considering me. :)

Silva Adrianiel

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

I have read The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Children of Húrin, and a bit of the Lost Tales Vol.1.

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Grammar, punctuation, spelling, canonical errors (habit of being too obsessed with Tolkien).

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

I'll beta anything from G to PG-13 and the occasional R if it is only rated for violence, blood, and gore. As for genre's, pretty much everything except for slash, some romances (i.e. Mpreg, incest), and explicit sexual content. Other than that, I'll beta anything!

  • Availability:

    Any time, really!

Spanish Ninja

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

Hobbit. Lotr. First chapter of the Silm.

    Grammar, spelling, continuity

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

    Action, mystery, all ratings

  • Availability:

    Please e-mail.

Tindomiel

  • Amount of Canon Consumed:

LotR trilogy, the Silmarillion and Unfinished tales with an amount of knowledge in Elven languages and customs

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

Fast reader, excellent grammar and spelling instinct. Can help with syntax and synonyms

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

Is willing to read anything. Prefers shorter stories or one-shot vignettes.

  • Availability:

    anytime

XII. The Peoples of Middle Earth

  • Beta Reading Strengths:

I am very well acquainted with editing both fiction and non-fiction for grammar, readability and flow; in the past, I have done this professionally. I am bilingual (English and Japanese), but while I can help you with Japanese language questions, I do not feel that I am sufficiently fluent (anymore) to edit Japanese for grammar. I am also familiar with both Sindarin and Quenya, and while I do not consider myself to be able to speak (or read Tengwar) either, I am comfortable providing help and/or brainstorming for the best way to express ideas in both of these languages for authenticity.

  • Beta Reading Genre and Rating Preferences:

If I had to choose a genre that I would consider my specialty or my strong suit, I am particularly familiar with writings that are inspired by Lord of the Rings Online. I have 8+ years of experience in both writing and editing within this subject, and am familiar with the interplay of the in-game lore and the canon lore by which it is inspired, and familiar with the way one's character is meshed into the game world/canon lore combination.

Another thing I consider to be a strong suit of mine is helping to interpret the canon lore as it would affect/apply to a role-playing or fiction situation, and whether an idea (for example, "Can my elf-lord have a human lover/companion/spouse?" or "I'd like to make this/that/the other character gay. How would that work out?") is feasible. Spoiler alert: Many, many situations are absolutely acceptable; the biggest issue is exploring how it would affect your character/situation.

Outside of those specific strengths, my interest is generally in works that are parallel to or within the scope of what is accepted as canon - for example, stories that take place within the canon universe but are not a part of or intersecting with any of the extant story-lines.

However, both in-canon and crossover slash-fiction are not things in which I am interested, nor are they something I feel I can help with - I'm too much of a canon scholar to be able to help with this, with one exception: I am more than happy to help you write or edit humor-based slash fiction (for example, if your idea is "Fëanor goes to Ikea" or "Sauron and Aragorn's Road Trip to the Grateful Dead concert", count me in).

I am comfortable working in all ratings, and while I am not, in general, personally interested in erotica, I am happy to help edit it for you (as long as it isn't slash erotica, anyway - like I said, I don't feel I can help with that!).

  • Availability:

I am available via e-mail, mostly, throughout the afternoon, and often later at night. I am in the Pacific time zone.

  • How Valaraen will beta for you:

I prefer to read in TXT, PDF, RTF, Pages, and HTML/Wordpress/Tumblr. I do not use GoogleDocs but I am willing to try, though I cannot edit for you in real time (such as via phone, live chat, or Skype). I like to annotate/edit in photoshop with my pen tablet (as if I was reading a physical paper), but generally I edit in Pages, TextEdit or Word, and just use color or formatting to indicate the changes I feel would be good.

Vanalosswen
